8BitDo’s latest retro-inspired controllers celebrate the NES turning 40

8BitDo is celebrating the NES’s 40th birthday in style with a lineup of limited-edition accessories that match the aesthetics of Nintendo’s iconic console.

The new NES40 Collection is headlined by the limited edition variant of the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth controller that looks like it’s straight out of the 80s.

Limited to 1,985 units worldwide (a nod to NES’s launch year); the Ultimate 2 NES40 controller brings back the classic grey-and-red design, complete with glossy metallic accents and that unmistakable D-pad. It also comes with the full 8BitDo package: a charging dock, 2.4G adapter, transparent NES Retro Receiver, custom joystick caps, and even a collectible 8BitBot keychain.

As for specs, it’s the same as the original version of the Ultimate 2 controller – it boasts TMR joysticks, Hall effect triggers, custom back paddles, fast bumpers, and an RGB fire ring around the sticks. The controller is compatible with the Switch, Switch 2, and Window devices, but 8BitDo has also chucked in a Retro Receiver – allowing you to connect it to the NES.

But the collection doesn’t stop there – 8BitDo also revealed two other NES-inspired peripherals: the Retro 68 Wireless keyboard and the Retro Cube 2 speaker.

The mechanical keyboard is made completely from aluminium alloy and uses Kailh Box Ice Cream Pro Max Linear Switches with six dampeners and RGB backlighting. It supports Bluetooth Le, 2.4GHz wireless and wired connections and can run for up to 300 hours, apparently. It also comes with two programmable wireless super buttons – again made from aluminium – that you can map to anything you like.

The Retro Cube 2 is a small wireless speaker that’s packing some pretty big upgrades from the original release. This version features dual stereo speakers, a built in microphone, a 2,000 mAh battery which offers up to 30 hours of run time, and the option for a 2.4GHz connection. It can also be charged via a wireless dock, which is included in the bundle.

The NES40 Collection is available now in limited quantities through 8BitDo’s official site. The controller costs $79.99 and will ship on November 18, the Retro 68 Keyboard costs $499.99 and ships in January 2026, and the Retro Cube 2 Speaker costs $49.99 and ships on December 12.
