The Houston Texans have a mystery on their hands with running back Joe Mixon.
Mixon has been sidelined due to an unspecified foot injury since the offseason and that landed him on the non-football injury list to begin the 2025 campaign, and Mixon remains on the list through Week 7.
It remains unclear exactly what injury Mixon is dealing with, or how he suffered it, and there is also questions about his ability to play at all in 2025.
Here’s the latest update on Mixon as we prepare to turn the page to Week 8 after Houston’s Monday night contest against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 7.
Will Joe Mixon play in 2025?
There is no concrete answer to this question.
Back in August, general manager Nick Caserio cast doubt on Mixon’s ability to play at all in 2025, but he seemed to be a bit more optimistic about Mixon when asked about the veteran’s status on Oct. 7.
“He’s making progress, so we won’t put a particular timetable on it, so I think over the next few three or four weeks, we’ll probably get a little more information here, kind of see how he’s progressing,” Caserio said.
“Once we kind of get to that period, probably have a better sense of which way it’s going to go for the duration of the year.”
According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, Mixon’s injury is a “tough, complicated situation” and there is no guarantee he plays this year.
So, long story short, there appears to be a 50/50 chance he plays, at best, and we would probably say it’s leaning more toward Mixon not suiting up this season.
Mixon was one of the better running backs in the NFL last season, so losing him has been a tough blow for Houston’s offense.
That said, Nick Chubb, and to a lesser extent rookie Woody Marks, have done a decent job filling in. Houston’s rushing attack isn’t elite by any stretch, but the Texans are averaging a respectable 116.2 yards per gamewhich ranks 16th.
