Eos Energy to announce $350M expansion including Pittsburgh HQ for zinc battery operation

A zinc battery manufacturer will expand its footprint in the Pittsburgh region and relocate its headquarters to the North Shore in a deal expected to be announced Tuesday afternoon.

Eos Energy will invest more than $350 million in Pennsylvania for the project, according to a release from Gov. Josh Shapiro’s office.

The state is providing $22 million and Allegheny County is offering up to $2 million to support another expansion of Eos’ leased space in Turtle Creek and addition of a 432,000-square-foot leased space in Marshall.

The company will also move its headquarters from Edison, N.J., to Nova Place on the North Shore, according to an advance copy of the announcement.

Eos makes zinc-halide batteries that are a cheaper, albeit larger, alternative to lithium ion batteries. The zinc-halide batteries could one day be used to store power for the electric grid, Eos officials told the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Review in a 2023 story about a $400 million U.S. Department of Energy loan made to the company.

That loan allowed the company to expand its footprint in Turtle Creek on the sprawling industrial park along the Monongahela River that used to be ground zero for George Westinghouse’s operations.

“In today’s competitive environment, and in what we’re working to achieve in powering the nation’s future, you need not only natural resources and technology innovations, but also a strong public-private partnership,” said Eos Energy CEO Joe Mastrangelo in the statement released by Shapiro’s office. “What we are announcing today is built upon a strong industrial history, combined with a world class university ecosystem. Pennsylvania is positioning itself at the forefront of America’s energy transition — enabling us to bring America’s battery to scale.”

Eos batteries are made of 91% domestic products, according to the company.

Other Allegheny County elected officials and economic development leaders are also supporting the project, which is supposed to create 735 new jobs in the county, according to the governor’s office.

The project was coordinated by Shapiro’s BusinessPA team, which has also fostered projects from companies including:

• Mint-X, which relocated its manufacturing operation from Queens, N.Y., to Hazleton

• Excelitas Technologies, which moved its headquarters from Massachusetts to Pittsburgh

• Adare Pharma, which relocated to Northeast Philadelphia from New Jersey

• Schless Bottles, which relocated to Allentown from New Jersey.

Eos Energy reported $15.6 million in revenue in 2023 and a gross loss of $83.3 million, according to its 2024 finanical report. Its stock, traded as EOSE on NASDAQ, closed at $15.01 on Monday.
