The Boeing CH-47 Block II
The Chinook is one of the most legendary helicopters to ever serve in the US military’s helicopter fleet. Originally designed by Vertol in the 1950s, it entered service in 1962 and was soon deployed into the Vietnam War. It’s become a staple of the US Army helicopter fleet and has also been deployed for the Army National Guard as well as the US Army Reserve.
To date, over 1,200 Chinooks have been constructed across nearly 65 years of production. Boeing acquired Vertol in 1960, and it has been responsible for the helicopter’s explosion in popularity, with the type being exported to numerous countries around the world. It’s been lauded for its success in combat operations, while also finding use in disaster relief and even finding homes in the civilian world.

The CH-47F Block II is the latest upgrade to the Chinook, having first flown in 2024. The Army is also planning for a Block III upgrade in the coming years, and current helicopter fleet renewal plans call for the Chinook to remain in service past the 2060s. This would make it perhaps one of, if not the longest-serving aircraft type in the US military’s historywith its possible retirement date coming over 100 years after the type first entered service.
