The New York Rangers are back at Madison Square Garden with an opportunity to get back in the win column—and in the win column at home for the first time this season—against the San Jose Sharks. Both teams have struggled so far this season, as the Blueshirts have only accumulated three wins through eight games, and the Sharks are still seeking their first win of the year.
Thus far this season, the Blueshirts’ power play is clicking at only 15 percent, the seventh worst in the NHL. The power play has been a big emphasis at practice for head coach Mike Sullivan, as it needs to get going if the Rangers are going to find success. On the flip side, Igor Shesterkin is expected to start for the team. Shesterkin has been amazing to start the year and leads the league in both goals against average and save percentage.
Player to Watch: Matt Rempe
With how big Matt Rempe is, it’s pretty hard not to watch him when he’s on the ice. When Rempe and the fourth line have been deployed, they have made an impact on just about every shift. While the points haven’t come, he has generated plenty of scoring chances.
More importantly, Rempe has not been a liability while on the ice. Through eight games, he has only served two minutes in the penalty box. In his first eight games last season, Rempe had already racked up 24 penalty minutes. If Rempe can continue this level of play, his impact will be huge, especially down the stretch.
