ATP Basel Day 2 Predictions
Raphael Collignon vs Arthur Rinderknech
Collignon announced himself to the tennis world with a stunning upset of Casper Ruud at the US Openand he’s been playing pretty well since then. Rinderknech hasn’t played since his miracle run to the Shanghai Masters final two weeks ago. I’d have to imagine that Rinderknech will be at his absolute best as the indoor season heats up.
Prediction: Rinderknech in 2
David Goffin vs Marin Cilic
This is a battle between two men well past their prime. Both are almost certainly retiring in the coming years. And yet, both are quite capable of brilliant tennis once in a while. Cilic has the higher upside, and when you play indoors the still and fast conditions suit his game better.
Prediction: Cilic in 2
Marcos Giron vs Denis Shapovalov
Shapovalov has shown glimmers of his old self at times this year, but he’s still far from who he could be. Giron, meanwhile, seems to have a cap on his talent that doesn’t stop him. The American loves playing up to his competition and in bigger events, but I think the Canadian should like these courts better.
Prediction: Shapovalov in 3
Ben Shelton vs. Kamil Majchrzak
Ben Shelton should thrive on fast indoor courts. The conditions can’t throw off his game, and his lefty power game should be brutal. I want to see what he can do when he’s having fun winning matches at big events.
