A nor’easter churned its way up the East Coast on Sunday, washing out roads and prompting air travel delays as heavily populated areas of the Northeast experienced excessive rain, lashing winds and coastal flooding.
Heavy rain fell from the Carolinas all the way north into New England.
“The greatest effects are going to be the coastal flooding potential,” said meteorologist Bob Oravec with the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland.
The weather service said parts of the county received up to seven inches of rain, while wind gusts of more than 30 mph were already being recorded in the region on Sunday morning.
Some flight delays and cancellations were announced in airports from Washington, D.C., to Boston, where Flight Aware said there were 82 delays and 20 cancellations at Logan International Airport.
“I just walked up to the counter to get my ticket and they said it was canceled,” Sean Farby told NBC10 Boston.
“I found out that my flight has got delayed to Jacksonville by one hour,” another traveler said. “Not very good because it’s going to arrive late until midnight”
“I’m going to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to see my mom and my flight is delayed by an hour and a half,” a third traveler told us. “My parents are picking me up at the airport so now they are going to have to pick me up at midnight which they are probably not going to be very happy about. Hopefully I am able to go and I don’t get stuck until tomorrow.”
The nor’easter brought heavy rain and gusty winds Sunday afternoon in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Passengers flying to Mid Atlantic and Northeast cities were receiving compensation for cancelled flights from airlines like Delta and JetBlue.
Some passengers, including a man named Aaron who was flying with his family back to Tampa, were taking the delays in stride.
“I found out at like 2:30 and my initial reaction was I’m going to go to the bar,” he said with a laugh.
Passengers like Farby were busy strategizing the best way home.
“I am looking for the next flight out so that might cause me to spend the night or I’m gonna just have to see if I can get onto another flight with a different airline,” Farby said.
The FAA has issued ground delays at major East Coast airports from Logan to LaGuardia in New York.
