Dahbia Benkired was sentenced, Friday, October 24, to irreducible life imprisonment for the murder of Lola, 12, in October 2022 in Paris. The irreducible life sentence, also known as real life imprisonment, is the highest penalty provided for by the French penal code. Until now, it had never been pronounced against a woman.
This sentence is in accordance with the requisitions set out a few hours earlier Friday by the attorney general against Mme Benkired. On October 14, 2022, she lured Lola under duress, into her apartment in a residence located in the 19the arrondissement in Paris, before raping her, torturing her then killing her by blocking her airways with adhesive tape. What followed was an erratic flight, loaded with a trunk in which she had placed the little girl's body.
“The sentence must ensure the protection of society, prevent the commission of new offenses and restore social balance” and to be “at the height of extreme gravity” of the three crimes committed, “of the suffering they caused among the victims, like his family”, “of their cruelty”had justified the representative of the prosecution before the Paris Assize Court in his requisitions.
During a presentation lasting approximately one hour and fifteen minutes, the Advocate General was implacable towards Dahbia Benkired, now 27 years old, whom he considered to be « yes [sa] situation is atypical, it is because of its extreme dangerousness”.
“Make no mistake”he warned the three professional magistrates and six popular jurors who have examined his case since October 17, “no drug treatment could fundamentally transform M’s personalityme Benkired. When there is no disease, there is no treatment”.
“Psychopathic” personality traits
During the debates, three psychiatric experts had simultaneously excluded any pathology of the accused which could have exempted her from her criminal responsibility, despite personality traits “psychopathic”and insisted on their reservations regarding the possibility of treatment.
“The risk of recurrence is maximum due to these personality traits, due to the absence of appropriate treatment”thus estimated the representative of the prosecution. “The one that presents itself to us, I only see a worrying continuity, which makes one shudder”castigated the advocate general, who had introduced his indictment with the words of Albert Camus: “A man can't be stopped. » “Dahbia Benkired, she doesn’t stop herself, she doesn’t stop herself anymore”he estimated.
To the jurors who were preparing to leave to deliberate on Friday, Dahbia Benkired released her last words: “I ask for forgiveness and it’s horrible what I did. That's all I have to say. »
