(1) - Pawl (v. t.) To stop with a pawl; to drop the pawls off. (2) - Pawl (n.) A pivoted tongue, or sliding bolt, on one part of a machine, adapted to fall into notches, or interdental spaces, on another part, as a ratchet wheel, in such a manner as to permit motion in one direction and prevent it in the reverse, as in a windlass; a catch, click, or detent. (1) - Pawn (v. t.) To pledge for the fulfillment of a promise; to stake; to risk; to wager; to hazard. (2) - Pawn (v. t.) To give or deposit in pledge, or as security for the payment of money borrowed; to put in pawn; to pledge; as, to pawn one's watch. (3) - Pawn (n.) A stake hazarded in a wager. (4) - Pawn (n.) State of being pledged; a pledge for the fulfillment of a promise. (5) - Pawn (n.) Anything delivered or deposited as security, as for the payment of money borrowed, or of a debt; a pledge.
