(1) - Traverse (a.) A turning; a trick; a subterfuge.
(2) - Traverse (adv.) Athwart; across; crosswise.
(3) - Traverse (a.) Anything that traverses, or crosses.
(4) - Traverse (a.) Something that thwarts, crosses, or obstructs; a cross accident; as, he would have succeeded, had it not been for unlucky traverses not under his control.

(1) - Travertine (n.) A white concretionary form of calcium carbonate, usually hard and semicrystalline. It is deposited from the water of springs or streams holding lime in solution. Extensive deposits exist at Tivoli, near Rome.
