John Hughes Documentary In Works From ‘Tiger King’ Filmmaker

EXCLUSIVE: Filmmakers Chris Smith and Jack Turner are in talks with John Hughes III to produce an official, authorized documentary about the legendary Chicago-based filmmaker John Hughes. Jack Whigham of Range Media Partners will also be producing.

With exclusive access to an extensive, never-before-seen archive of photos and behind-the-scenes footage, the project promises to deliver the definitive portrait of the writer and director who helped shape youth, music and pop culture in America in the 1980s and ’90s.

Hughes is seen by many as one of the most influential American filmmakers of his generation. He is best known for writing, producing and directing such films as Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Buller’s Day Off, Planes, Trains & Automobiles and Uncle Buck. He also wrote such classics as National Lampoon’s Vacation, Some Kind of Wonderful, Pretty in Pink and Home Alone.

Smith’s projects include the Emmy-nominated documentaries Jim & Andy, Tiger King and 100 Foot Wave. His first documentary American Movie won the Grand Jury prize at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Other projects include Operation Varsity Blues and the series Bad Vegan.

Turner is an Emmy-winning producer whose recent credits include the Emmy-nominated Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, BS High, Sneaker Wars: Adidas v Puma, Merchants of Joy and Stephen Chbosky’s Emmy-nominated Nonnas.

Hughes III is an experienced producer and former record label owner. He is a co-founder of Blue Cuckoo Pictures, a documentary film production company based in London and Chicago. Most recently, he served as an executive producer on Twinan upcoming feature-length documentary which tells the story of two Chicago brothers and an incredible miscarriage of justice.
