KRC Genk will host the Spanish Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday evening. Can Genk get something done against a strong Betis? Follow it live here from 6:45 PM.
Genk not yet up to speed
A change in food makes you eat, the saying goes. A change of competition might also do that for Racing Genk. The Limburgers are currently experiencing a very mediocre season in the Jupiler Pro League. With 7 out of 9 they have made a leap in the rankings, but the good football has been lacking for a while. For the time being, Genk is in 8th place in the rankings thanks to that 7 out of 9.
Things certainly started fantastically for Thorsten Fink's troops in the Europa League. On the field of Scottish Rangers they deservedly won 0-1 and the turnaround seemed to have started. But at the next European obstacle, Genk stumbled again as they lost 1-0 at home against Hungarian Ferencvaros.
And that ensures that RC Genk has 3 out of 6 in the Europa League after two games. With some tough matches ahead, such as a trip to Braga in Portugal, every point is more than welcome. Starting with the next tough assignment: at home against Real Betis.
Experience is an asset in Spain
The Green and White have started a strong season in Spain. After 9 matchdays they are in a nice 5th place and have only lost once in all competitions this season. Although they still have to play against top teams such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
Especially if you look at the selection of Real Betis, it is a bit of a swallow for Racing Genk. With Antony (ex-ManU), Bartra (ex-Barcelona, ex-Dortmund), Junior Firpo (ex-Barcelona) and Sofyan Amrabat (ex-Club Brugge, ex-ManU), there is tons of international experience in the selection of coach Manuel Pellegrini, another man with tons of experience (ex-Man City).
With 4 out of 6, Betis has started the Europa League better, but not flawless either. Moreover, they have already conceded an average of more than 1 goal per match in La Liga this season. Scoring is certainly not impossible for Racing Genk and will be necessary as the Limburgers have not been able to keep a score of 0 in the past 20 matches.
